The political situation in the United States and around the world has affected both the loan market and cross-border flows of trade and investment throughout 2018. As we enter the last year of what has been a tumultuous decade, there is little sign of things calming down in the immediate future. Will the political debate around the merits of trade and globalization be helped or hindered by a divided Congress? Will the UK’s imminent departure from the European Union continue to fan the flames of political populism in Europe and elsewhere? What impact will the return of strategic competition between the United States, Russia, China and other countries have on international commerce?

This session did:

  • Assess some of the major trends in world politics which have developed over the past year
  • Consider how events are likely to develop in 2019 and what their effects may be on the loan market and the global economy
  • Offer some practical thoughts on how we can all enhance our analysis of these events to better understand a world which remains highly fractious and uncertain
